Thomas Robert Gerth, 83 of Tipton died at 3:40 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2015 at Miller's Merry Manor in Tipton. He was born July 21, 1931 in Hendricks County to Elmer D. & Dorothy (Stout) Gerth. On April 3, 1955 he married Carolyn Helen Jordan and she survives.
Tom had worked at Perfect Circle for 10 years and Allison Transmission for 17 years, retiring in 1998. He was a life-long farmer. Tom was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed basketball and watching his children's sporting events. He graduated from Avon High School in 1949 where he was a member of their first county championship basketball team. He had attended Canterbury College in Danville, Indiana.
Survivors besides his wife Carolyn include four children, Thomas J. Gerth and wife Elizabeth, Indiana, Robert E. Gerth, Missouri, Lisa C. Shockney, Texas and Sara L. Calhoun and husband John, Indiana; four sisters, Kathryn Russell, Betty Jo Schmith, Sandy Gosset, and Sue Doty; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Brenda, and one granddaughter, Stefani.
Funeral services for Tom will be held at 11:00 a.m.. on Tuesday, February 24 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Robb Roloff presiding and burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, also at the funeral home.
