Phil Hoke

October 17, 1925 — February 26, 2013

Phil Hoke, 87 of Tipton died at 8:58 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Community Howard Regional Hospital in Kokomo. He was born October 17, 1925 in Tipton to Walter Franklin & Orintha (Riley) Hoke. He married Phyllis B. Hinds on June 22, 1946 and she preceded him in death on May 25, 1991.

Phil was a former Rural Route 5 mail carrier and Postmaster of the Tipton Post Office, retiring on January 4, 1984. He was a member of West Street Christian Church, American Legion, and volunteered at Tipton Hospital for many years. Phil graduated from Tipton High School, Class of 1943, where he was Class President and played on the basketball team. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII (Iwo Jima) and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Phil is survived by three daughters, Carol Hoke, Tipton, Nan Gunderson and husband Gene, Caldwell, Idaho, Jill Whelchel, Tipton; two granddaughters, Jennifer Morris and husband Scott, BethAnn Whelchel, and great-granddaughter, Riley Morris. He was preceded in death by his brother Jim Riley, son-in-law, Jim Whelchel, and great-grandson Elijah Whelchel.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton with Rev. Linda McKiernan-Allen presiding. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
