Jeffrey A. “Sarge” Scharff, 61 of Tipton died at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at his residence after an extended illness. He was born December 28, 1954 in Deland, Florida to Ralph Scharff and Jodi (Cox) Scharff. On October 31, 1998 he married MaryAnn Francis and she survives.
Jeff was a graduate of Tipton High School in the class of 1973. Upon graduation he served in the US Air Force for four years and was stationed in Spangdahlem, Germany. He was named Jaycee of the Year in Cicero in 1994. Sarge was a past member of American Legion Post 46 and Tipton Moose Lodge #1590. He was an avid IU Basketball, Dallas Cowboys, and Tipton Blue Devils fan. He was able to watch the Cubs win the second game of the World Series. Sarge enjoyed music, sports, fishing, and most of all his family, especially his three grandchildren. He was a Harley enthusiast; ABATE member, and “frequent flyer” at Sherill’s Eat Here and Get Gas.
Sarge is survived by his wife MaryAnn; a son, Kurt Scharff and wife Cheryl, Sharpsville; his mother Jodi Plake, Tipton; his father and step-mother, Ralph & Susanne Scharff, Florida; two sisters, Debbie Williams, Tipton, Kim Summers and husband Greg, Tipton; three grandchildren, Gracie, Kole, and Maggie Scharff. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Martha Longfellow nieces and nephews, Brad Williams and wife Jennifer, Scott Williams, Nicole Eller, Justin Summers and wife Emily, Sarah McCorkle, Aaron Reynolds, Marshall Longfellow, Mady Longfellow; several great-nieces and nephews as well as step-sisters, Rhonda Purvis and husband Marc, Valerie Heard and husband Rex and Vickie Hall and husband John; several step-nieces and nephews; a cousin, Eddie Pheanis and wife Roseann and his beloved dogs, Petey and Ari.
An Affirmation of Life service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1 at West Street Christian Church, 132 N. West Street, Tipton with the Rev. Dr. John C. VanNuys presiding and military honors presented. Burial will be at a later date at Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be at the church from 3:00 until time of the service. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
