Ben O’Banion Barr, 95 of Indianapolis died at 11:56 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 21, 1918 to Ben Harrison and Brough (O’Banion) Barr. He married Mary Joan Spaeth on October 7, 1989 and she survives.
Ben worked with International Shoe Company of St. Louis for 30 years. He attended Indiana University and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He was a WWII Veteran, serving in the 94th Infantry Division of Patton’s 3rd Army. He served in France, Germany and the Czech Republic from February of 1942 to January 1946.
Ben belonged to the Purchasing Managers Association. He was active in Boy Scouts, both as a youth and as a leader for a total of 77 years, earning the Silver Beaver Award. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club in St. Louis for 31 years and was a 78-year member of the Union Avenue Christian Church in St. Louis. Currently he was a member of the Northwood Christian Church in Indianapolis over the past five years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, Scott , James, and David Dulebohn ; three grandchildren, Rachel, Joy and James Dulebohn; and one brother, Bruce Barr and wife Thalia of San Diego, California.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7 at Fairview Cemetery, Tipton with Rev. Ted Nottingham presiding and military honors. No visitation is scheduled. A memorial service at Northwood Christian Church will be scheduled at a later date.
